Banking for Startups

Presented by Peter Meath and Adam Smith of Square 1 Bank

Wednesday, November 3th
11:45am to 1: 00 pm
ATDC Tech Square Community Room

After successfully closing a record-breaking $105 million private placement, Square 1 Bank opened its doors for business on August 8, 2005. At its launch, it opened the doors of six offices across the country, and now it has ten – in Austin, Boston, Boulder, Durham, Los Angeles, McLean, New York metro, Palo Alto, San Diego and Seattle. Square 1 Bank specializes in providing financial services to entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. It helps growing companies and their investors navigate financial obstacles by providing access to funds and expertise.

Peter Meath and Adam Smith will talk about Square 1 Bank, Venture banking and their thoughts on the national funding environment.

Peter Meath joined Square 1 after completing his MBA at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in 2005. During his years in academia, Peter served a one-year Venture Capital Fellowship with Intersouth Partners, a $800 million venture capital firm located in Durham, NC.  Prior to these experiences, Peter was an integral part in the establishment of the Research Triangle Park, NC, office of Silicon Valley Bank, and worked within the first Southeast office of Silicon Valley Bank in Atlanta, GA.

As Director of the bank’s Square Roots program, Adam Smith focuses on helping pre-venture companies and early entrepreneurs become successful through hands-on support, specialized connections and financial services targeted to their distinctive needs. Prior to joining Square 1, Adam was Vice President of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), the largest entrepreneurial support organization in the nation. At CED, Adam was the executive responsible for financing strategy, early stage company mentoring, strategic direction and opportunities, fund-raising and sales for high-level prospects and cultivating key customer relationships such as the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. In working with the foundation, Adam led the team that authored the curriculum for the FastTrac TechVenture program, a world-renowned training and mentoring program for technology and life science entrepreneurs. Through his time with Square 1 Bank and CED, Adam has worked with over 600 early stage companies and innovators. Adam graduated with a BSBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler School of Business in 1999.
